Student Attendance & Exam Monitoring
An academic system for student attendance, exam session management and notification workflows, with a web app, a REST API and a mobile app. Text-only case study: the system is internal to the institution.
Full-stack developer — web, API and mobile notifications, plus ongoing support
Problem
Staff needed one place to track student attendance and manage exam sessions, and students needed timely reminders during peak examination cycles. Background jobs also had to be managed without giving non-technical staff server access.
Approach
Built the web system on CodeIgniter 4 and MySQL with role-based access control, and exposed REST APIs for the Flutter mobile app to retrieve notifications and sync data. Notifications go out through Firebase Cloud Messaging. Scheduled background work is managed from a UI-based cron job manager instead of the server.
Outcome
The system ran through its lifecycle with ongoing maintenance and on-call standby, with bug fixes and enhancements handled through support tickets.
Highlights
- Role-based access control across web and API
- UI-driven cron job manager so non-technical staff can schedule and monitor backend tasks
- Real-time exam reminders to students through Firebase Cloud Messaging
- Database schemas optimised for high-volume writes
- Attendance verification with a config-driven submenu and role-based status updates
